The Tiruvannamalai district police on Saturday launched 24 bikes fitted with the GPS and the public address system for patrolling key stretches and streets in the temple town during the Chitra Pournami festival.
Superintendent of Police A. Pavan Kumar Reddy flagged off the bikes, which will be connected to the control room through the GPS. As the town is expected to get over 20 lakh visitors for the festival this weekend, these bikes will help to reach out to the needy and prevent petty crimes. “The GPS bike patrolling has been introduced only in the temple town. It will be extended later to other major towns,” Mr. Reddy said.
The district police have 54 police stations, including 39 under the law and order wing, with a total strength of over 2,000 personnel. Besides beat policing, the district police have strengthened surveillance through technology by fitting two-wheelers for the beat policemen with the GPS.
At present, the district has 64 two-wheelers for regular patrolling of the temple town and key highways, including the Puducherry-Bangalore Highway. Of them, 24 bikes have been fitted with the GPS in the first phase. These bikes will be used to regulate traffic in the congested town, especially around the famous Arunachalaeswarar temple and along its 14-km girivalam path. Subsequently, all beat policing vehicles will be covered.
Under the initiative, the police can have real-time data, including the time spent at each spot by the beat constable, the route taken, the area covered within a specified time and the speed taken to reach each spot. Each patrol bike has at least two constables with three beats for each station.
