RALEIGH – After five months of record-setting job openings for technology and IT roles based in North Carolina, there’s a sign that the state’s demand for tech workers may have slowed in June.
That’s according to the latest data from NC TECH, the North Carolina Technology Association, and its monthly IT Job Trends Report, which tracks the number of IT job postings.
The latest report found that there were 52,650 job postings in North Carolina in June, down from an all-time high the prior month, when there were 58,457 job postings in the state’s IT sector.  That’s a drop of nearly 10% in job openings month-over-month.
Report: Tech workers still in high demand in NC, even as labor market overall expected to slow

“The dip in IT job postings for June is no surprise given recent news on slowing in hiring and layoffs generally,” said Andrea Fleming, director of talent and workforce development at NC TECH. “However, that number is still up 41% from this time last year and North Carolina and continues to earn spots on numerous rankings for places to live, invest and innovate.”
Still, the 52,650 job openings represents a 41% increase from June 2021, when there were 37,265, and the total postings in the state’s IT sector remained higher than the number of openings at the end of the first quarter of the year, as in March there were 50,487 job openings, the first time in the report’s history where the number of openings surpassed 50,000.
“For one, I think it is expected that we would see job openings slow, here,” Dante DeAntonio, director of economic research at Moody’s Analytics told WRAL TechWire in an interview on Monday.  “It’s not overly surprising to see, in North Carolina, in technology, that this is happening.”
That’s due to some emerging fears around venture capital funding, technology startups, and more uncertainty about the future direction of the national economy, said DeAntonio.  But that’s not just happening in North Carolina, it’s happening across the nation.
“A natural reaction from some firms,” DeAntonio noted of firms like Google and others that have recently announced a slowdown in hiring plans while Microsoft as well as Triangle-based startup Adwerx announced layoffs.  It’s easier for companies not to hire new employees than to hire them and later determine that layoffs are necessary, noted DeAntonio, and so there may be a decreasing number of job openings compared to prior months.
High-tech job openings in NC set a record: Nearly 50,000

Regionally, Charlotte’s metropolitan statistical area saw 17,743 IT job openings in June, while the Raleigh area had 17,620.  Openings in Charlotte increased by 44% year-over-year while in Raleigh, openings had increased by 59%, according to the report.
The Durham-Chapel Hill metropolitan statistical area had 4,562 openings, a 7% increase year-over year.
“Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham are doing well and will probably continue to do well, even in a recession, they will weather that recession well, as population growth will help weather the recession,” said DeAntonio.
But the MSA that grew the most year-over-year was Winston-Salem, the report found, with a 76% growth in job openings, as the region had 1,123 open IT roles in June 2022, the report found.
“Even if the downward trend continues, North Carolina holds a strong position moving forward,” said Fleming in an NC TECH statement.
DeAntonio agreed, noting that the state has attractive demographics and has recently received accolades for its strong business climate.  Last week, North Carolina was ranked first in the nation by CNBC and in a separate analysis by Business Facilities magazine for the strength of the state’s business climate.
“Across the board, industry by industry, it’s hard to find a weak spot in North Carolina,” said DeAntonio.
