Zilliqa, a layer-1 blockchain, unveiled its prototype version of its Web3 gaming console, seemingly preparing to dive head first into a console war with other industry players like Sony, Steam, and Microsoft. The console will reportedly let players mine its native Zil crypto tokens while they have fun playing Web3 games.
According to their statement on publisher venture beat, the console will come bundled with first-party Zilliqa games, mining utilities, and a Web3 wallet, all of which are designed to keep both gamers and crypto enthusiasts in mind.
The gaming console will bring crypto applications and games to one place where players can earn rewards or buy/sell in the marketplace.

From the pictures released, the console has a boxy form factor, with designer plates on top, and a large power button on the front. The pictures also revealed several ports on the console – a headphone jack, ethernet, USB-C, USB 3.0, and HDMI, among others.
The company has plans to launch this gaming hub by next year with two of its native Web3 games. The launch will be followed by more games with unrevealed creators.
As of yet, the company is yet to report on its hardware configurations among other details.
“With the backing of Zilliqa’s large crypto community and the easy-to-use infrastructure, we have no doubt that we can become the Steam equivalent for Web3 games,” said Valentin.
Steam has been a household name for PC gamers. According to Statista, a data firm, Steam reported an average of 132 million monthly active players in 2021.
There’s also an established market built around Web2 games with incumbents like Sony, Microsoft, Steam, and Nintendo holding each of their helms.
For instance, Steam is one of the largest centralised gaming hubs where people can buy games, trade in-game items, and maintain a digital library of owned games. It is a one-stop-shop solution for many PC gamers except that it’s a closed economy controlled by centralised figures and stakeholders.

Although it’s too early to nosedive into the competitive pool of the Web2 gaming industry, Zilliqa’s novel attempt at a Web3 gaming console can empower gamers and video game creators with a self-sustaining economy with a play-to-earn model backing it.
The incentive economy of this gaming hub will attract gamers, non-gamers, and crypto/non-crypto enthusiasts alike.
