It took a quarter of action but the No. 4-ranked Ferris State University football team put last week’s loss to Grand Valley State behind them and dispatched an upset-minded Michigan Tech team 28-20 from Top Taggert Field in Big Rapids on Saturday.
The Huskies jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter of play and held a 10-7 advantage at halftime. Ferris State responded by reeling off three touchdowns in the second half, including twice in the final quarter of play to put the game away.
Ferris State improves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC play, while Michigan Tech falls to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in GLIAC play. The win for Ferris State was the 10th consecutive victory in the all-time series against the Huskies.
Ferris State finished with 405 yards of total offense, including 242 yards passing, while holding Michigan Tech to 271 yards of total offense and -26 yards rushing on 14 attempts. Penalties remain to be a problem for the Bulldogs, however, as they were called for 12 penalties for 126 yards.
Quarterback Carson Gulker was 7-for-13 passing for 174 yards with one touchdown and one interception and rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries to pace the Ferris State offense, while Tyrese Hunt-Thompson hauled in four receptions for 130 yards and a 75-yard touchdown.
CJ Jefferson had four receptions for 39 yards, Brandon Childress had two receptions for 31 yards, Marcus Taylor caught four passes for 29 yards and rushed 11 times for 60 yards and Evan Cummins was 8-for-12 passing for 68 yards.
Jovan Bayless led the Ferris State defense with six stops, while Cyntell Williams added five tackles and Justin Payoute and Ian Hall each added four tackles.
Will Ark was 26-for-50 passing for 297 yards with one touchdown and one interception to pace the Michigan Tech offense, while Brandon Michalak hauled in eight receptions for 155 yards and Darius Willis added seven receptions for 48 yards and one touchdown.
Marc Sippel registered 15 total tackles to lead the Michigan Tech defense, while Braxton Blackwell added 12 tackles and Hunter Buechel had 11 tackles and had a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Ferris State football program celebrated the career of two-time Harlon Hill Trophy winner Jason Vander Laan, who became the first player in the program’s 113-year history to have his jersey and number officially retired in a special pregame ceremony. The Bulldogs also dedicated the victory bell in honor of former head coach Bob Leach.
Ferris State will hit the road this week, as they travel to the Upper Peninsula to face Northern Michigan University (3-5, 1-4 GLIAC) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 from the Superior Dome in Marquette, Michigan.
